Privacy policy

Who we are

Burgundy Atlas is operated by Le 1er Crew LLC, a company in the United States (“we,” “us”). We are responsible for the personal information described here. Burgundy Atlas is the first regional atlas from Wine Atlas.

This policy covers burgundyatlas.com and the Burgundy Atlas app for iPhone, including its TestFlight beta. It explains what we collect, why, who helps us process it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.

The short version

  • The website works without an account. The iPhone app asks you to sign in with Apple so your saved places and tasting maps stay with you.
  • We count how the Atlas is used with our own privacy-reduced counters: no analytics cookies, no advertising, and no identifiers that follow you.
  • We don’t sell or rent personal information, show ads, or track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
  • You can delete your account in the app at any time, and ask us to access, correct, or delete your information.

On the website

  • Usage counts. When you use the map, the site sends short, privacy-reduced events, such as “a village was opened” or “a comparison was made,” to our own endpoint. Our server keeps only daily aggregate counters. It never stores the raw event, and it rejects search text, account, device, session, and location fields, and full page addresses. The site sends no cookies or browser identifiers with these events. If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the site sends no usage events at all.
  • Searches. When you search, your query goes to our Read API to find results. The query is not added to usage counts. Like any web request, it reaches our hosting and edge providers along with your IP address and browser details.
  • Your location, if you allow it. Some map views offer a “locate me” button. If you allow it, your browser shares your position with the page, which places you on the map. We don’t receive or store it. Showing that area loads map tiles for it from our map providers.
  • Stored on your device. Your browser keeps your language, map settings, recent searches, land journal, and whether you’ve seen the welcome message. This stays in your browser’s storage and isn’t sent to us.
  • Connection data. Every request to the site and to the services it loads, such as fonts and map tiles, includes your IP address and browser details. Those providers process this data to deliver content and may keep it in their standard logs.

In the iPhone app

  • Account. Sign in with Apple, which may share your name and your email address or an Apple relay address, and a user ID from Firebase Authentication.
  • Optional profile. A display name, a unique handle, a profile photo, and a city and country, only if you add them. The app doesn’t request GPS location.
  • Your content. Saved places, tasting maps and the wines you add to them, and feedback you send. Tasting maps you choose to share can be seen by people who have the link.
  • Usage counts. The same privacy-reduced aggregate counters as the website. The app adds no advertising identifier, device identifier, installation, account, or session identity to them.
  • Diagnostics. Technical data from the Firebase services the app uses, such as authentication and database errors.

Beta sign-up

To join the iPhone beta, you give us your name, email address, and country. We also record whether you arrived directly, from our own site, or from another site, and a campaign label if the link you followed had one. We use this only to run the beta and understand who is testing it. It is never sent to analytics and never used for marketing without your separate consent. After you sign up, we send you to Apple’s TestFlight, which Apple runs under its own terms and privacy policy.

How we use information

  • To provide the Atlas: show maps and places, run search, keep your saved places and tasting maps, and share the tasting maps you choose to share.
  • To run the beta and answer your messages, including corrections and deletion requests.
  • To understand, in aggregate, which parts of the Atlas are used, so we can improve it.
  • To keep the service secure and working, and to prevent abuse.
  • To meet legal obligations.

We don’t use your information for advertising, and we don’t make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.

Who processes it

We share personal information only with service providers who help us run Burgundy Atlas, under their terms:

  • Google (Firebase and Google Cloud): hosting, server functions, authentication, database, and file storage.
  • Apple: Sign in with Apple and TestFlight.
  • Map providers: OpenFreeMap for base-map tiles and Mapterhorn for terrain tiles, which receive your IP address when your device loads tiles.
  • Google Fonts: the site’s typefaces, which your browser loads from Google.

When else we disclose it

We may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or as part of a merger or acquisition, in which case this policy continues to apply. We don’t sell or rent personal information, and we don’t share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

How long we keep it

We keep your account, profile, saved places, and tasting maps until you delete your account or ask us to delete them.

Beta sign-up records are set to expire 12 months after you sign up. Daily usage counters, which contain no personal information, are set to expire 25 months after the day they count.

We keep messages you send us for as long as we need to answer them. Our providers keep request logs under their own standard retention periods.

Your rights and choices

  • Delete your account in the app under My Atlas › Settings › Delete account.
  • Ask us to access, correct, delete, or export your information, to object to or restrict a use, or to withdraw consent, by emailing le1ercrew@gmail.com. We may need to confirm it’s you, and we’ll respond within the time the law requires.
  • Leave the beta list at any time by emailing us from the address you signed up with.
  • Turn off usage counts on the website by enabling Global Privacy Control in your browser.
  • Control location and storage through your browser settings.
  • Complain to your data protection authority if you are in the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland. We’d appreciate the chance to help first.

If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law, you have the rights described above, and we won’t treat you differently for using them. We don’t sell or share personal information as those laws define it.

International transfers

We are in the United States, and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where the law requires it, these transfers rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses.

Security

We limit what we collect and who can reach it. Beta sign-ups and usage counters are stored where only authorized operators can access them, and connections to the service are encrypted. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.

Children

Burgundy Atlas is about wine and is intended for adults of legal drinking age. It isn’t directed to children, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.

Changes

When our practices change, we’ll update this page and its date. If a change is significant, we’ll give notice in the app or on the site before it takes effect.
